Met Eireann offers upbeat forecast for next week after miserable weekend washout (2024)

We will not have it all our way this weekend as moods are set to be dampened by an unsettled few days ahead, but next week shows some promise of reprieve.

The announcement of Met Éireann's "unsettled" forecast for the latter end of the week defied a weather prognosis from just a few days ago where models pointed to a special spell of summer sun and heat from Friday, but this changed rapidly to leave us with a dreary outlook as the week progresses.

The national forecaster predicts "heavy" rain as models show thick and dark bands of precipitation floating in from the southeast before engulfing the entire country from Thursday.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather says that we can expect a low system to usher in wind and rain for Friday and Saturday too. He wrote on X: "Odd shower Tuesday and Wednesday but then the weather takes a real turn with wet and windy weather moving in Wednesday night into Thursday. Staying unsettled into weekend with low system bringing wind and rain Friday into Saturday."

However, models also suggest a clear-up of the miserable conditions after a rough weekend as showers dry up for a period early next week, starting next Monday and lasting until Thursday or Friday. Cloud cover is still possible with average temperatures around 15C.

In fact, Met Eireann is also offering a rather upbeat outlook for next week, saying of the week of Monday, June 17 to Sunday, June 23: "This week is signalled to be drier than the previous week with high pressure to the southwest building. Temperatures will likely return to more normal values for the time of year. Drier than average conditions are expected in the west and northwest with average amounts elsewhere. No hazards are indicated at present."

For the following week of Monday, June 24 to Sunday, June 30, it continued: "This week is indicated to be more settled as high pressure continues to build and having more of an influence over the country with a largely slack airflow. Much of the country will have around average temperatures, possibly a bit warmer than normal in the southwest. Drier than average conditions are expected throughout the country. No hazardous weather is indicated."

Tuesday

"Today will be dry for most with just isolated showers drifting southeastwards across the country. A bright start with widespread spells of sunshine but patchy cloud will spread from the northwest through the day. Highest temperatures of 12C in the north to 17C in the south in light to moderate northwest winds."

Wednesday

"Wednesday will be dry with a mix of sunny spells and patchy cloud to start. Cloud will build from the west later in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 13C to 18C, warmest in the south, in light westerly winds, increasing moderate at times later."

Thursday

"A wet day with widespread rain, turning heavy at times in the west and southwest. The rain will gradually clear northeastwards through the afternoon and evening with scattered showers and a few sunny spells following from the west. Blustery at first with fresh southerly winds, veering westerly and easing moderate once the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 15C to 18C."
